Meet Sheila: The Calm Behind Shield’s Collision Campaign

Apr 18, 2026News

If you have been watching TV in Northern Ireland this year, scrolling through social, or driving past a billboard somewhere between Belfast and Ballymena, there is a good chance you have already met her.

She is small. She is soft. She has bristles made from a yard brush and a calm that settles the room the moment she appears.

Her name is Sheila, and she is a hedgehog.

More specifically, she is the face of Shield Accident Management’s Bringing Calm to Collisions campaign and the answer to a question Shield has been asking for years: how do you help people feel calm in one of the worst moments of their driving life?

This is who she is, where she came from, and why she matters.

The Moment Sheila Was Built For

Here is the thing about a road traffic collision. It rarely feels real while it is happening.

One second you are driving home from work, picking the kids up from school, or heading to a Saturday morning shop in Lisburn. The next, there is broken glass on the road, an airbag in your face, and a stranger at your window asking if you are okay.

Most people freeze. Some shake. Many cry. Not because they are hurt, but because they do not know what to do next.

Shield’s own research found that 57% of drivers would call a family member first after a collision, while only 13% would think to contact a professional accident management provider. That gap between what people should do and what they actually do in the moment is exactly where Sheila steps in.

Because in that moment, nobody wants a phone tree, a policy number, or a stern voice asking for a reference. They want someone calm. Someone who knows what happens next. Someone who makes the situation feel manageable.

That is Sheila’s role.

How a Hedgehog Became a Brand

Sheila was not created in a boardroom or pulled from a stock library. She was built by hand in Northern Ireland by people who care about craft.

Prop and set designer Diana Ennis spent weeks creating her from scratch. She shaped her form, sourced her materials, and made her bristles from yard brushes, a process that, by her own admission, briefly cost her her fingerprints.

On set, puppeteer Holly Greig brings Sheila to life. Her careful, deliberate movement makes Sheila feel less like a character and more like a quiet presence.

The creative direction came from agency Genesis, led by Creative Director Darren Lyttle, who saw a chance to take a different route in a category that usually relies on noise.

“In a crowded market, Sheila gives the brand a face people can connect with, and she is already stealing hearts,” said Darren.

She launched on 19th May across TV, radio, out of home, and social, and has been settling into Northern Ireland’s memory ever since.

What Sheila Actually Stands For

It would be easy to think Sheila is a mascot. She is not.

A mascot is there to be cute. Sheila is there to mean something.

The Bringing Calm to Collisions campaign is built on a simple but powerful idea: when panic and stress take over at the scene of a collision, Shield rolls in to handle it. Anywhere in Northern Ireland. From the busiest urban streets to, as the campaign puts it, “any hole in the hedge.”

She represents how Shield wants drivers to feel after a collision. Not panicked. Not pressured. Not pushed into a decision they do not understand. Calm. Cared for. In safe hands.

That is not just brand language. It reflects the experience Shield has built for drivers across Northern Ireland since 2018, from its base in Moy, Dungannon. When a non-fault driver calls Shield, the aim is simple: remove the noise and replace it with clarity.

“When Sheila rolls in, you can relax, because Shield has arrived and you are in safe hands knowing everything will be handled for you,” said Monica Hughes, Director at Shield.

That is the promise behind the puppet. Everything else, from recovery to repair to claims handling, is how it is delivered.

What Calm Looks Like in Practice

Calm can sound like a soft idea until you are the one sitting on the hard shoulder waiting for answers. Then it becomes very real.

For Shield, calm has structure:

  • A single phone number that connects you to a real person, 24 hours a day
  • A recovery agent sent to your location anywhere in Northern Ireland
  • Your vehicle moved to secure storage, then to a repair garage you trust
  • A like-for-like replacement vehicle so your routine continues
  • A claims handler dealing directly with the third-party insurer
  • Legal and medical referrals through trusted partners if injuries appear later

All of this is provided at no cost when the accident was not your fault, with fees recovered from the at-fault insurer.

That is the accident management NI service Shield has been delivering for years. Sheila is simply the face that helps people remember it when it matters.

Why This Matters Beyond the Advert

Northern Ireland’s roads are unpredictable. Winter ice, spring glare, summer traffic, autumn rain. Conditions change quickly, and preparation matters. The PSNI’s road safety guidance consistently reminds drivers that the difference between a near miss and a collision is often a matter of seconds.

But preparation is not just about tyres and distance. It is about knowing who to call when something goes wrong and being able to recall that name when your hands are shaking.

That is where Sheila comes in. She is memorable. Familiar. Calm.

A small presence that surfaces at exactly the right moment.

And once she is in your mind, Shield is too.

The Quiet Power of a Calm Brand

Most accident-related advertising across the UK and Ireland follows the same pattern. Urgent voices. Bold claims. Fast moving text.

Shield chose a different path.

Bringing Calm to Collisions runs through everything the company does, from a late night phone call to the way a claims handler explains your options, to the stillness of a billboard on the Westlink.

It is quieter. More measured. And it connects, because calm is what people are actually looking for.

Get to Know Sheila and Shield

Sheila will continue to appear across Shield’s social channels throughout the year, with new moments and stories from the road.

She is more than a character. She is a reminder.

A reminder that if something happens, you do not have to handle it alone. That help is one call away. That your repairs, your replacement vehicle, your claim, and your peace of mind can all be managed by people who do this every day.
